Christmas has always been a time of wonder, filled with joy, tradition, and the warmth of family. For me, the magic of Christmas and the spirit of the season is tied to one of my cherished childhood memories… a moment that embodies hope, love, and the spirit of the season.
When I was about ten years old our family went into the mountains for the Christmas holiday break and stayed in a cabin. Having only a few days before Christmas Day to prepare our festivities my older brother and I set off on an adventure into the snow to find the perfect Christmas tree. At that elevation the snowpack was deep, with drifts rising above my head in some places, and my older brother trudged through the deep snow carving a path in front of me. To say the least, I struggled to push through the chest-high snow with my 10-year-old frame.
As we climbed hills and through brambles of flocked evergreens we came up over another rise when I started to feel the cold seep into my bones. At that point I could not continue to keep up with my much taller brother. He was excited by the prospect of finding the perfect tree for our family that year and had not noticed that he was far outpacing me. In the thickly drifting falling snow I quickly lost site of my brother, and the path he had forged ahead of me filled with new falling snow almost as quickly as he pushed it aside.
It wasn’t long before my brother must have noticed I was not behind him anymore, and he came back to find me shivering and softly crying, my arms and legs tucked tight against my body to keep as much warmth in as I could. His smile as he approached was as warm as the promise of a glowing fireplace. He told me he had found the tree that would be the center of our Christmas holiday that year, then hoisted me up onto his shoulders and continued his march into the woods. I don’t remember actually cutting the tree down, or the trip back to the cabin with the tree tugged behind us, but I do remember that year was one of the most magical Christmas memories I have. I’ll never forget the magic of that Christmas—the joy, the love, and the unbreakable bond of family.
