How to Downsize Your Home With a Pet

Downsizing with your Dog in Mind

If you’re considering downsizing your home and you’re concerned about your pet’s well-being, there are several interventions you can take that will prepare the pet for the new living conditions. Maybe you have been in a home with a sizable yard that allowed your dog to run around but you want to downsize to a small apartment. This can mean a drastic change of environment, which means you must help your buddy adjust to a smaller space. Downsizing your home should not be stressful, for you or your pet!

Train Your Dog Before the Move

If you’re moving to a smaller space, there might not be outdoor space for the pet to run around. Before the move, train your dog by gradually restricting their access to the outdoors. Take it slow while implementing the new changes to ease your pet into the idea. Getting your pet used to a new routine will make it easier to adapt to the new home, so the transition will be smoother. Moving without properly training your furry friend could lead to anxiety, as the sudden change of routine can be very stressful and frightening.

Toilet Train

Again, you need to do this well in advance. If your pet goes outside to do their business, it might not be possible if you move to a smaller space. Potty training will make it easier to transition into the new home. Whenever the dog needs to go, put them on a leash and take them to the “potty.” If you have already moved into the new home, you can start training the pet following the same steps as you would before relocating. You need patience for this, as the change can take time to adapt.

Feed Your Dog Inside

Another aspect of preparing your dog for a downsize is making them accustomed to eating their food indoors. This is important if the pet is used to feeding outside, so you can put their food bowls indoors and start the training process. Use the same room you would use in the new home; for instance, if you want to use the laundry room as the feeding area for your dog, you can train them to use the space in your current home.

Besides training, you’ll also need to research to find a home to buy. There are different things to look out for when looking for a new home, including calculating the amount you can afford as a down payment and applying for a mortgage. To take out a mortgage, you need to calculate your debt-to-income ratio to know how much you can afford.

Take More Frequent and Longer Walks

For a dog that was used to a large backyard with lots of space to play, it can feel restricting moving to an apartment. You’ll need to walk your dog frequently to keep them in perfect shape, so it’s a good idea to train them to embrace the new routine. Before moving, take frequent and longer walks. Find a park nearby with enough space so the dog can run around freely to get the exercise they need. Depending on the breed, your dog may need at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise each day. Also, because your pet is likely to suffer boredom in the small space, you need to provide toys that will offer them entertainment. Also, practice new commands and tricks for mental stimulation.

Downsizing your home can be overwhelming, especially if you have a pet. However, if you put in preparation prior to moving, your transition will be smoother. Your pet might like the new environment, so preparation is everything.
